Are You Stacking Hacks on Unsteady Foundations?
When it comes to our body goals and health, we can all find ourselves searching for the one thing that will catapault us to our end goals, whether that’s the latest supplement, trending workout, or gadget that promises amazing results. It’s tempting to believe that one single change will be the ‘magic fix’, the reality is, health and body transformations don’t work that way.
It’s like learning a new skill, whether it’s starting a new sport or activity or learning a language - success happens in stages. You have to start with the basics, and work through levels as you advance. Our bodies are no different.
Levels
If you’re serious about reaching your body goals in a sustainable way, you have to think of health habits in levels.
The Essentials – These are the non-negotiables. The foundational habits that keep us functioning at our best, such as balanced meals, movement, and sleep. Without these, nothing else will be as effective as it should.
Strategic Refinements – Once the fundamentals are solid, we can refine strategies for better efficiency, performance, and results.
Enhancements and Optimisation – These are the extras that enhance the process, such as gadgets, supplements, and biohacking strategies that can help with fine-tune your efforts. But these only work effectively if the first two levels are in place.
Instead of relying on quick fixes, focusing on working up through levels helps to ensure that every step you take builds on solid ground.
This is exactly why I developed The Body Confidence Framework—a structured way to help busy clients achieve their health and body goals in a structured, results-driven way.
My Body Confidence Framework is built on three progressive levels that ensure lasting results. Whilst this can be personalised, there is a general structure I work from.
Firm Foundations
This is where success begins. Without these, everything else is built on shaky ground. These can include:
Balancing Blood Sugar: Food choices and combinations to avoid energy crashes and cravings.
Portion and Proportion Guidelines: Ensuring you get the right mix of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Quality Sleep: Supporting metabolism, hormone balance, and recovery.
Basic Strength Training and Daily Movement: Building muscle and maintaining mobility.
Correcting Nutrient Deficiencies: This might be general dietary improvements or based on test results for a personalised approach.
Smarter Strategies: The Refinements
Once the foundations are solid, you can refine and elevate your approach. For example:
Structured Training Programmes: A tailored workout plan that aligns with your goals.
Strategic Supplementation: Choosing supplements to further support energy, hormones, digestion, or specific needs.
Genetic Testing and Personalised Nutrition: Understanding what works best for your individual body needs.
Meal Timings: Fine-tuning when you eat for better results.
Proactive Stress Management: More advanced techniques beyond the basics to keep stress under control.
Enhancements
These are the “cherries on top”. Enhamcements generally work best when the previous levels are in place. For example:
Nootropics and Cognitive Enhancers: Supplements like Lion’s Mane for brain health.
Gadgets and Biohacking Tools: Wearables, red light therapy, or cold water immersion.
Optimisation Strategies: Small tweaks that make a big difference when the foundations are solid.
Why This Framework Matters
It’s easy to get distracted by the latest health trends and overlook the simple, proven actions that build long-term success. No nootropic will compensate for dehydration and poor sleep. No expensive supplement will override stress-fuelled blood sugar spikes. The fundamentals always come first.
Next time someone raves about a new supplement or health trend, consider it—but check in with your foundations first. Are your activity levels, sleep, blood sugar, and stress levels in check? If so, that ‘sexy hack’ might be a great addition. But if not, your best investment is in solidifying those essentials first.
This framework is also a great tool for when things start to slip or plateau. We are creatures of habit, and without realizing it, we may let foundational habits slide. If progress stalls, return to the essentials and rebuild from there.
